Outward Bound’s general payment terms and conditions are based on the investment we make in planning, staffing and delivering our courses. These expenses are not recoverable in the case of short-notice cancellation or transfer. By requesting an Application for Outward Bound you are accountable for the information contained here.
We acknowledge there is a lot to read but all the information is important as you are about to make a significant commitment of money and time. If you are the parent of an applicant, you are making an investment in the growth and development of your child as well as giving the gift of an amazing opportunity.
We STRONGLY RECOMMEND you purchase one of the following:
The deposit includes a $150 non-refundable enrollment processing fee and the remaining $350 deposit is refundable if a student cancels their enrollment more than 90 days before the course-start date. The below are exceptions when the total deposit is refunded including the enrollment processing fee.
The total published cost of your course includes all tuition and fees associated with the course. Tuition covers the costs of food, instructors, permits, and equipment. Not included in this total cost are personal expenses such as clothing, insurance (health and travel), airfare, baggage fees.
Fees include a $150 non-refundable enrollment processing fee and a $150 transportation fee covering costs to and from the course start and end location and travel to and from course activities during the course.
The balance of tuition and fees is due 90 days prior to course start. Be prepared to pay the full balance of tuition and fees at this time, even if you have yet to submit your completed enrollment packet or have yet to be cleared to participate on the course. Regarding promotional discounts, OBCA reserves the right to rescind discounts for past due payments or paperwork.
If your payment is not received by the deadline, this may be considered a cancellation, and you risk losing your place on the course and your $500 deposit.
In the event that you are not cleared to participate on the course, Outward Bound California will refund paid tuition and fees with the exception of the $150 non-refundable enrollment processing fee.
The $150 enrollment processing fee is refundable only if:
Outward Bound California does not refund tuition and fees in the event that you are unable to attend or complete the course due to unexpected events, illness or injury except in the case of purchasing TPP.
There are no penalties if a student cancels more than 90 days before the course-start date. With the exception of the $150 non-refundable enrollment processing fee, Outward Bound will refund $350 of the Deposit fee and 100% of the Tuition fee payment.
If you cancel 90 days or fewer from course start, the cancellation penalties listed below, will apply to the full published tuition or full amount due (if any) for scholarship recipients. The penalty IS NOT based on the amount paid to date on the day you cancel.

On occasion, relocating or canceling a course is the only way we can maintain our high safety standards. When those complications such as inclement weather, environmental disaster or similar uncontrollable interruptions occur, we have the following policies:
Courses relocated to another course area: Programming will continue and no refunds or credits will be issued.
Courses which have not started: Full course refund including fees (if not able to be transferred to future course)
< 25% Course Completed: Full course credit*
25-90% Course Completed: Prorated course credit*
90-100% Course Completed: No course credit
*Course credit is non-transferable and must be used by same student on an OBCA course, before the end of next calendar year. It can be used for future tuition only and cannot be applied to course fees of $300.
Late return of the application and forms will delay the review of other customers’ applications and will jeopardize your spot on course. If your application or tuition is past due your spot may be made available to other applicants. Overdue application materials will be considered inactive and cancellation penalties will apply.
Failure to provide accurate complete information could compromise your or other participant’s safety and course quality. Our goal is for every student to have a successful course. By sharing all physical, emotional or behavioral conditions, we can help you choose the course that will provide you with the highest chance for success. Additionally, undisclosed conditions that result in early departure are not eligible for a refund.
Please report injuries, illnesses, new medications or changes to your prescription to your course advisor. If you arrive on course with an unreported medical condition or other diagnosis or if you have changed the type or amount of medications since submitting your medical form, and have not told us about it, you may not be allowed to begin your course!
If the course a student has chosen is full, the student may have the option to be waitlisted. In order to reserve a spot on the waitlist the student is required to submit the initial enrollment form and $500 deposit, as well as complete the enrollment packet and pay the Tuition fee balance by the assigned due dates.
If a spot becomes available, it will be offered to the student who returned their completed enrollment packet first; not to the student who enrolled on the waitlist first. This student will have 24 hours to decide whether or not to take the open spot. If a spot does become available and the student elects not to take it, the $150 enrollment processing fee will not be refunded.
If a spot does not become available, or the student elects to be removed from the waitlist immediately upon enrollment, Outward Bound will refund the full $500 deposit.
A student may transfer from one course to another one time for no penalty if it is more than 60 days from the course start date. A $100 transfer fee will apply to subsequent transfers more than 60 days from the course start date.
For transfers fewer than 60 days before the course start date, you will forfeit 50% of your paid tuition and fees and the other 50% will be applied to your new course. Outward Bound California will not issue a refund for any transfers fewer than 30 days before the course start date.
IF YOU ARE EXPELLED FROM COURSE
You will incur a 100% tuition penalty and may be subject to an additional Early Departure Fee to cover the expense of accompanying and transporting the student from the course area. This will vary depending upon the location of the student and availability of resources.
You may be expelled from course and required to leave if we determine that you are:
Divorced parents and third party payers; we only require one legal guardian signature. It is up to you to fulfill any obligations or decision-making agreements with your former spouse. Similarly, you are responsible for informing a third party payer of the cancellation penalties and any subsequent financial obligation is yours.
Outward Bound California prohibits discrimination against any student or applicant because of race, color, religion, sex, gender, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation, qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability, or any other category which may be protected by applicable state or federal law. Outward Bound California also promotes respect for all people, and will not tolerate harassment based on any of these characteristics nor on differences based on gender identity or expression.
The plans highlighted below help protect your financial investment with Outward Bound California (OBCA). If you elect not to purchase one of these plans, the Cancellation Policies will apply.
We strongly recommend that you purchase the OBCA Tuition Protection Plan for Pre-Course Cancellation or invest in a third-party Trip Insurance plan, which has the potential to cover course tuition, airfare and/or emergency evacuation. Coverage depends on the Trip Insurance option purchased.
If you elect not to purchase the TPP and need to cancel for any reason, you will be held to the terms of the Cancellation Policy.
**For those who purchase the TPP within 45 days of course, pre-trip cancellations are not eligible for refunds.
This pre-course cancellation plan is available for purchase until time of your final payment DUE DATE. This plan cannot be purchased after the payment DUE DATE noted in your Registration Email.
**If you choose to transfer to an Outward Bound course not in California, the TPP will be refunded if the transfer is greater than 60 days before the start of the original OBCA course. If you transfer to another course within California, the TPP and costs will transfer with you, there will be no refund on the price difference if any apply.

These plans can be purchased by a third party vendor of your choice. Some plans may cover course tuition, airfare and/or emergency evacuation. There are many vendors who sell this type of insurance. Two examples are below who are familiar with Outward Bound programs. Outward Bound is not affiliated with either agency and does not receive any commission. In the case of an early departure or cancellation, you would contact them directly, we can provide support documentation when requested.
