The Service Bus Expedition is an opportunity for staff and instructors to “live the values” of Outward Bound by volunteering their time and energy to improve the communities in which we work. Building on the successful model of the Service Bus at the North Carolina Outward Bound School, the OBCA edition will consist of a 6-week west, coast road trip combining both wilderness and urban service projects, rock climbing professional development, as well as marketing and outreach to grow the visibility of Outward Bound across California and open up access to our life changing courses for California youth.
The crew is starting their road trip in San Francisco on November 6th and will make their way through the Central Valley and into Southern California with a quick detour to Red Rocks Canyon State Park. After spending time in Las Vegas, the crew will celebrate Thanksgiving in Joshua Tree, head to San Diego for the first time and finish off the expedition back in San Francisco on December 14th.

SERVICE BUS MEMBERS
Meet the 2017 crew.
Danelia,A.K.A D-Lo, Grew up in San Francisco and has cultural ties all over the Bay Area. She has made a commitment to connecting as many youth to not only the outdoors but to themselves and their communities. She joined Outward Bound California, February 2016, to live the mission and make an impact in the community she grew up in. While on the ServiceBus, she hopes to expand her understanding of service, and continue to push her own boundaries to better serve the communities she is a part of. She loves to cook and chop it up! This year will be her second year on The Bus and her first time as a Facilitator!
Amanda just finished her first summer working with Outward Bound California in the High Sierra as an Assistant Instructor. During the rest of the year, she lives the classic OB nomadic lifestyle moving around living in her Buick named "Gramps". She is currently teaching Adventure Education at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado until she heads back to California for the Service Bus. Some of her favorite activities include climbing up big rocks, walking around the mountains, and thinking of terrible puns. When asked what she's excited about she said, " I'm stoked to spend five weeks with some great people doing great things on the Service Bus!".
Caroline was born and raised in Southern California where she learned to love being outside at a young age. She went on her very first backpacking trip after high school and has been doing everything possible to lead trips outside ever since. She is passionate about giving more people the chance and knowledge to enjoy the outdoors as much as she does. After interning at Outward Bound California this past summer, she is more than excited to participate in the Service Bus this fall!
3rd year Outward Bound California instructor in the High Sierra and alumni of the Service Bus 2015 crew, Patty is used to adventuring and road-tripping all over the state of California as well as the country and world! This past year she has been lucky enough to instruct in Australia for Outward Bound and explore her ancestral roots in Ireland while rock climbing and trail running. Patty does her best to follow her dad’s values: Do one good deed for the Earth or another human every day - if someone sees you do it, do another one - praise is not needed for doing things that are right. Patty is excited to see all the good being done in so many different ways all over the state of California again this year and she's excited to play a part in facilitating an experience to help fellow staff truly, ‘live the values,’ of Outward Bound.
2017 was Marie's first year working for Outward Bound California. After a killer summer of backpacking through the High Sierra, she is spending her fall season backpacking through the country meeting people on Greyhound and Amtrak. She is also spending quality time with family and friends along the way. She recently had a "millennial moment" after trying to pay an Uber driver with cash, so she can't wait to be on the road with the rest of the Service Bus ladies as they travel their way through the great state of California! Some hobbies of hers include flying kites, staring out windows, and microwaving cheese curds. She plans on doing all these things and more with the Service Bus.
