The Southern California Program Director (PD) leads of all our Joshua Tree, Los Angeles and Greater Southern California programming and is a key position to solidify our presence in the region. The PD will leverage a strong history of Outward Bound programming in Southern California to deliver safe, high quality programs, change lives through challenge and discovery, and mentor staff to do their best work. They will collaborate with the administrative office located in San Francisco to establish consistent programming, a highly trained instructor pool, and new school and non-profit partnerships, all while keeping safety of students as their highest priority. This position is a member of the Leadership Team and reports to the Director of Education & Safety (DES).

Outward Bound California is part of a national network of experiential and outdoor education programs for youth and adults. We use the inherent challenge of the wilderness and urban outdoor spaces to teach people of all ages to be compassionate leaders, serve their communities, and build character to ultimately reveal the full potential within all of us.
With a 50 year history in the US, we provide extended, expeditionary style rock climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, urban, and service courses, serving ages 12 and up, including adult and veteran programs. As a non-profit, more than 2/3 of our students receive partial or full scholarships to go on a course with us in the High Sierra, Joshua Tree and in the Bay Area.
Who You Are
Passionate about OBCA’s mission
Committed educator with Bachelor’s degree and/or 4-6 years’ experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field or any similar combination of education and experience is required
Program and partnership development a plus!
Strong leader with tested people management, organization, and administrative skills
Compassionate & effective communicator, both written and oral
Flexible and adaptable, sense of humor a must!
Initiative taker with strong follow through
Independent worker and cooperative team member, able to work effectively in a remote setting
Comfortable giving and receiving positive and constructive feedback
Proven problem solver
Able to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
Proficient with PC, Microsoft Suite, and with Google Apps
Comfortable with travel throughout California
Proficient in backpacking and expeditionary travel in desert and alpine environments - experienced rock climber a plus!
Current WFR, CPR and Food Handlers certification is required

Have experience working at the Joshua Tree basecamp and course areas
Have your Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) certification through the AMGA
Collaborate with OBCA Leadership Team to determine and fulfill program needs, goals and strategy
Oversee Joshua Tree Program Team with a focus on staff development.
Directly supervise Program Manager (PM) and Head Logistics Coordinator (HLC)
Oversee course scheduling, staffing, and enrollment management in partnership with Regional Staff
Collaborate with OBCA Program Directors and other charter’s Program Directors to set regional and national vision of program excellence
Perform local Human Resource and supervisory roles, including tracking field staff days worked for payroll, onboarding, and staff performance oversight
In collaboration with the Director of Operations and Finance, develop and manage local budget and meet financial reporting requirements
Lead in developing and maintaining a strong Southern California culture and program vision
Oversee basecamp maintenance and upkeep. Ensure basecamp adheres to all local and national regulatory codes and policies
Respond to field emergencies, sometimes as the incident commander, and perform on-call duties for courses in the field
Play an active role in developing and implementing all emergency response and incident procedures
Create and role model professionalism at all times. Uphold and follow all policies and hold staff accountable for the same
Reconnaissance and development of new course areas and program types in the region and maintenance of existing relationships
In partnership with the Marketing Team, support outreach to local schools (private, public and college) and non-profits
Attend donor meetings and fundraising events as needed in coordination with the Fundraising Team
Ability to participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to running, backpacking and rock climbing.
Ability to lift and move a minimum of 40 lbs., and able to carry pack weight of up to 60 lbs.
Sitting or standing at a desk or computer 80% of time or greater.
Benefits, Compensation and Location
Full-Time, Exempt, Salaried position. Approximately 10-month position, with majority of work in August through April. Some remote work will be required in off months
Expected start date of early October 2018
Salary commensurate with experience
Position is located for 6-7 months at the OBCA basecamp in Twentynine Palms, California. Flexible location in Southern California for the remainder of the year.
Rustic and comfortable housing is provided while in Twentynine Palms
