The Basecamp Chef is a beacon of the community at our High Sierra basecamp and brings staff together with their delicious and nutritious meals each day. This position is responsible for all basecamp food-related planning and preparation for Administrative, Support and Field Staff. Additional scope of responsibilities will ensure all local and national health and food serving regulations are within compliance. The Basecamp Chef reports directly to the High Sierra Logistics Manager.

Outward Bound California is part of a national network of experiential and outdoor education programs for youth and adults. We use the inherent challenge of the wilderness and urban outdoor spaces to teach people of all ages to be compassionate leaders, serve their communities, and build character to ultimately reveal the full potential within all of us.
With a 50 year history in the US, we provide extended, expeditionary style rock climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, urban, and service courses, serving ages 12 and up, including adult and veteran programs. As a non-profit, more than 2/3 of our students receive partial or full scholarships to go on a course with us in the High Sierra, Joshua Tree and in the Bay Area.

Knowledge & Skills
Experienced in cooking for groups (50+), food handling, kitchen and food sanitation, nutrition, special diets and managing a budget
Possess prior baking experience
A strong communicator with excellent organizational skills
Personally motivated, with a strong sense of initiative and commitment
Experienced in the management and maintenance of compost systems
Education & Work Experience
Possess 1-3 years cooking experience
Able to regularly lift a minimum of 30-40 pounds
Able to stand for the majority of the day
Comfortable working alone for the majority of the time

Create nutritious, delicious and balanced lunches and dinners for all staff and guests
Ensure all meals are served in a timely manner
Accommodate food preferences and allergies, within reason
Plan meals for special events (50+) for multiple days, and oversee volunteers in meal preparation
Food Inventory, Ordering and Stocking
Regularly inventory, order and restock base camp food
Assist in the inventory, order and restock of field foods
Regularly inventory, order and restock base camp cleaning supplies
Oversee food deliveries
Purchase food locally as needed in coordination with the Logistics Manager
Maintain existing and develop new relationships with food vendors in order to best serve program
Supervise dining room and kitchen cleanliness and sanitation
Deep clean kitchen twice monthly
Maintain clean stocks of kitchen rags and aprons
Ensure all health codes and regulations are within compliance
Act as resource for base camp and field needs.
Uphold and follow Outward Bound California policies
Participate in daily basecamp chores and community living expectations
Other duties as assigned
Benefits, Compensation & Location
The is a Seasonal, Non-Exempt, Hourly position tentatively scheduled from April 27th - Oct 7th
Contract is based on a 40 hour work week, some work days will be weekends. Days off as desired and schedule allows
Starting hourly wage of $12 - $14/hour, depending on experience. Some overtime available for especially busy weeks.
Typical hours are from 8:30 a.m. (morning meeting) to 6:30 pm, with a break in the middle, taken at the discretion of the Chef. Based on a 7.5hr workday
Alternate arrangements can be made by agreement with the Logistics Manager to provide maximum flexibility and sustainability within this position
Rustic and comfortable housing is provided with close access to communal bathrooms and kitchen.
Food is provided while on contract.

This position is located at our High Sierra program base in Midpines, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills 30 miles east of Yosemite National Park
The basecamp has a main building with office, warehouse, and commercial kitchen. Other buildings throughout include administrative and field staff housing and communal areas
