The Service Bus Expedition is an opportunity for staff and instructors to “live the values” of Outward Bound by volunteering their time and energy to improve the communities in which we work. Building on the successful model of the Service Bus at the North Carolina Outward Bound School, the OBCA edition will consist of a 31 day west coast road trip combining both wilderness and urban service projects, rock climbing professional development, as well as marketing and outreach to grow the visibility of Outward Bound across California and open up access to our life changing courses for California youth.
The crew is starting their road trip in San Francisco on November 4th and will make their way through the Central Valley and into Southern California with a quick detour to Red Rocks Canyon State Park. After spending time in Las Vegas, the crew will celebrate Thanksgiving in Joshua Tree and finish off the expedition back in San Francisco on December 4th.

SERVICE BUS MEMBERS
Laura Manczewski grew up just outside of Cleveland, Ohio and earned a degree from Ohio University in elementary education. She left the indoor classrooms for the mountains of California to teach outdoor education and found a passion for the outdoors and wilderness.
She has spent the last nine years living and working in Yosemite National Park teaching outdoor education and environmental science. She started working for Outward Bound in 2013 as an instructor and has led courses in the Sierras and in Joshua Tree. She was a 2015 ServiceBus member and is excited to be back for the second round as a facilitator in 2016 and continue to walk the talk of service and the mission of Outward Bound.
Her travels have taken her from teaching English in Japan to outdoor education in China, climbing Mt. Kenya with Maasai women. She is looking forward to traveling closer to home and giving back to the communities of California.
Danelia Lopez,A.K.A D-Lo, Grew up in San Francisco and has cultural ties all over the Bay Area. She has made a commitment to connecting as many youth to not only the outdoors but to themselves and their communities. She joined Outward Bound California, February 2016, to live the mission and make an impact in the community she grew up in. While on the ServiceBus, she hopes to expand her understanding of service, and continue to push her own boundaries to better serve the communities she is a part of. She loves to cook and chop it up!
Jeff Podmayer has been with Outward Bound California for the past two years. He grew up in the Seattle area of the Pacific Northwest and is glad to be spending time in the California backcountry. He is excited about taking the time to serve people in varying communities around California while on the service bus, as well as develop deeper relationships with the three other staff. He would love to sit down with you and have good conversation over a cup of coffee.
A Pacific Northwest native, Sarah Murphy-Cook began her journey with Outward Bound California two years ago, providing service to the Bay Area base during volunteer nights. The wonderful community at Outward Bound sparked her interest and following an internship she began working in the Bay Area where she currently instructs. Sarah has always felt a connection with the outdoors and is excited to explore more of California on the ServiceBus. She is also looking forward to getting to know her co-workers further, meeting new people in communities across the state, and spreading her love of all things chocolate.
